Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency (LVSWWDA) has developed a Water Resources and Wastewater Management Master Plan for Kisumu County.
This is part of the objectives of Lake Victoria South Water and Sanitation (LVWATSAN) programme being implemented in Kisumu and its environs.
The programme is financed jointly by the French Development Agency (AFD), European Investment Bank (EIB), European Union (EU) and the Government of Kenya.
The Master Plan will address Water Resources and Waste Water related issues in Kisumu County.
Public participation on the draft Master Plan took place at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu and several stakeholders attended and gave their views.
This program will ensure that the existing water and sanitation infrastructure in Kisumu is rehabilitated and extended to supply water to the satellite towns of Maseno, Darajambili and Kiboswa. This will entail construction of 107km of water supply distribution System within the city, extending to the aforementioned towns.
The LVWATSAN program will ensure that there is increased water supply coverage from 67% to 90% by extending and rehabilitating existing network
It will also increase sewerage coverage in Kisumu City from the current 16% to 45%, through development of a new Sewerage Treatment works and collection system at Otonglo to collect and treat 8,000m3/day of waste water. This will reduce pollution of the lake.
This will be done through expansion of collection, transmission and treatment of sewerage infrastructure construction of 70km of sewerage network within the Kisumu City
The program is also expected to reduce high water loss/leakages from 45% due to old pipeline networks to 25%, and increase access to water and sanitation in low income areas of Manyatta, Obunga, Nyalenda among others.
The LWATSAN programme will also ensure provision of technical assistance to KIWASCO to reduce Non-Revenue Water from 45% to 20%.
