 Segetet Borehole Water Supply Project

Segetet area which has been experiencing water scarcity now has life as more than 2,000 people within Segetet sub-location are set to benefit from the supply of clean, affordable and sustainable portable water as the Segetet Borehole Water Project is now completed and currently operational. 

The project was financed by the Government of Kenya in the year 2019/2020 under National Water Harvesting and Ground Water Exploration Program and implemented by then Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency and is located in Segetet Primary School, Segetet sub location in Kipkelion West Sub County.

This borehole project is set to benefit Segetet Primary School, Segetet Day Secondary School, Segetet Dispensary, Segetet Market and residents of Kapsoton village. It will also address the Public Health and World Health Organization’s sanitation standards as the public schools’ sanitation facilities to the school population will now be well handled.

The area has been experiencing water scarcity as the seasonal streams and the roof catchment become unsustainable during the dry seasons. The school going children and community members were often forced to walk for more than two kilometers in search of water which in some cases could be contaminated. 

The project has a borehole drilled at a depth of 150 meters and pumping can yield 14400 liters of water in one hour using solar power after the installation of the solar panels minimizing on the operation costs. Also constructed and equipped is a pump house, 25000 liters capacity masonry tank, and two water kiosks each loaded with 5000 liters plastic tanks.

The project which is currently being managed, maintained and operated by the Community Management Committee which has eleven members elected by the community to run the project on day to day basis. The Committee members trained for three days by the LVSWWDA in areas of project management, revenue management and collection, operation and maintenance. It is therefore expected that the project will be self-sustaining through the collection of fees at the point of water collection.
